JANET(UK) launched the Voice Advisory Service (VAS) on 18/12/06. This service provides free advice and guidance to institutions on on all aspects of voice technologies, focussing on Voice over IP (VoIP) and IP Telephony. A wide range of information will be published on this web site, including technology guides, and case studies - see menu links above.

The use of IP networks to carry voice traffic is becoming more commonplace. Some JANET connected organisations occupying multiple sites have already interconnected traditional PBXs using IP and many have deployed full IP Telephony systems. There is also a significant interest in the use of the Internet to carry voice traffic due to the emergence of MSN, GoogleTalk, AOL and Skype products.
Voice over IP and IP telephony are strategically important areas that JANET connected organisations cannot ignore. The provision of high quality independent advice is however hard to come by as vendors invariably have a vested interest and often limited knowledge beyond their own product set and technology domain.
This situation was identified in the JANET Voice Survey which was carried out in 2005 and resulted in the formulation of the JANET Voice Strategy.
At the June 2006 meeting of the JCN, to address the above situation, the committee endorsed JANET(UK)'s strategy proposal to provide a voice advisory service for the community to provide an independent and impartial source of expert advice.
JANET(UK) is currently working towards establishment of a pilot service and is negotiating support contracts with technical specialists from the community.
The RSA in London hosted the 2nd JANET Voice Event on 23 November 2006 - presentations were given from a wide range of commercial and educational organisations. The presentations from the day are available for review.
