JANET TALK

The use of IP networks to carry voice traffic is becoming more commonplace, spurred on by the perceived benefits of lower costs, a more feature rich experience and less management overheads.

In 2005 JANET(UK) undertook a requirements gathering exercise to understand how JANET connected organisations are using IP networks to support voice services and to determine what JANET(UK) can do to support this. One of the objectives that was identified as a result of the requirements analysis exercise, and highlighted in the resulting JANET Voice Strategy, was the need for a central JANET voice service, providing downloadable software 'phone' clients, standards based connectivity, a central register of users and conference bridging facilities. It is envisaged that this will provide a powerful tool for collaboration, offering an increased feature rich environment over more traditional telephony methods.

The features of the service, which are currently subject to procurement, are likely to include:

Please note that all of these features are subject to procurement.
