DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

JANET is one of the world’s leading research and education networks. To ensure that JANET and its services continue to meet and enhance our users' requirements, JANET(UK) undertakes a technical programme that identifies emerging technologies and then develops production services.

The programme is based upon two documents: Development of Network Support for Applications in Learning, Teaching and Research [pdf / html] and SuperJANET4 Development Programme: Forward Look [pdf] (May 2002).

The Strategic Technologies Division is tasked with delivering the programme. All projects currently under development can be accessed from the subject menus on the left or directly below.

JANET Development Bulletin

The JANET Development Bulletin has been designed to keep users up to date on progress within the development programme. The bulletin provides an up-to-date summary of the technologies and applications to the JANET network, outlining important milestones and future areas of interest. To receive the email bulletin, please sign up to the Development Mailing List.

The latest edition of the bulletin is now available [JANET Development Bulletin July 2007]

SuperJANET

Until recently the core of the JANET network was referred to as SuperJANET. The project to replace the core network, called SuperJANET5, successfully completed early in 2007. An archive of the SuperJANET5 project pages is available.

40 Gbit/s Bandwidth

In June 2007, JANET(UK) launched 40 Gbit/s capacity across two of the busiest links on the JANET backbone; from July 2007 full production traffic was run between these links, and based on traffic growth predictions, widespread deployment of 40Gbit/s channels across the JANET backbone is expected during 2008.

Joint Development Advisory Group

The Joint Development Advisory Group (JDAG) advises JANET(UK) on the execution and continued development of a programme of network development activities associated specifically with the development of regional networks.

International Collaboration

JANET(UK) will be funding a programme of collaborative ventures with other research and education networking organisations within the international community. Interested parties who fulfil the criteria are invited to take part in the programme.

Research Use of JANET Traffic Data

A policy and legal framework has been created to allow data about traffic on JANET to be used for research that may assist the operation or development of the network in future.
