The JANET network has its origins in the Research Council and other Networks which were brought together to form the national infrastructure in 1984, and the Research Community continues to be at the leading edge in using networks to further its activities. JANET provides a high-quality, high-capacity network for communications within the UK and has excellent connections to our European and US peer networks to support international collaboration.
Certain topics which are likely to be of particular interest to the Research community are highlighted here, though it should be noted that these are a subset of a very broad range of activities and initiatives which are described in related sections.
One area to note is the current trend within academic networks globally to engineer separate capacity into their infrastructures to support demanding applications and potentally disruptive research and development work. The UK is actively following this direction and the concept is embodied in both the UKLight programme and SuperJANET5
